Anabolic steroids are synthetic (man-made) substances of testosterone (a male sex hormone). Doctors use anabolic steroids to treat hormone problems in men, delayed puberty in teens, and muscle loss from some diseases like cancer. Types of steroids include cortisol, estrogen, progesterone, and anabolic steroids.
Bodybuilders and athletes may use anabolic steroids to build muscles and improve athletic performance, but usually taking doses much higher than would be prescribed for a medical condition. Using them this way is illegal—and not safe! This is probably the most common way of abuse that we hear of in the media. I'm sure you can think of at least one athlete that has made headlines for their steroid abuse.
Steroid use among teens and young adults has risen dramatically over the past few years. In fact, 5-12% of male high school students and 1% of female students have admitted used anabolic steroids by the time they are seniors. Steroid abuse can lead to long-term and sometimes irreversible health problems.
