Fit Work #10 - Warm Up & Stretching

Due Thursday, April 9!! Tempted to skip your warm up? DON'T! Your warm up is an important part of your exercise routine. Did you know that warming up helps your body prepare itself for exercise both mentally and physically? It may also decrease your chance of injury, as well as reduce the aches and pains that come with exercise. It is one of the most important elements of an exercise program. Adding stretches to your warm up may improve your exercise performance. Once your muscles are warm (from an easy jog for example), spend a few minutes on stretching. Since the goal of your warm up is to increase your heart rate and get ready for more intense work, choose stretches that can be done standing up. Delay most sitting stretches until your cool down segment. Hello Students and Parents- During this period of distance learning, your physical education classes will be conducted online, just as your other classes. Our classes will follow the format below. Each day a workout video will be posted to our Google Classroom. You are expected to access and complete this workout daily. After the workout, you will need to complete your daily learning log, where you will reflect on the workout and provide evidence that you did the workout. FiT Work #8 - Summer Olympics 2020

The 2020 Summer Olympics will soon begin in Tokyo. This is a major international sporting event showcasing athletes from a record number of different countries. This year's Summer Olympics will be followed by the Paralympic Games featuring disabled athletes from around the world. Both competitions are a wonderful way to bring nations together to celebrate success! In order to complete this homework assignment you need to click on the  Official Olympic Website  then follow the directions for  ONE  of the options below. Option #1: Use the arrows to scroll right or left to choose an athlete you might not yet know, place the cursor over their photo, then click on LEARN MORE. Asthma causes recurring periods of wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe), chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing.  Asthma affects people of all ages, but it most often starts during childhood. In the United States, more than 25 million people are known to have asthma. About 7 million of these people are children. Asthma has no cure. Even when you feel fine, you still have the disease and it can flare up at any time.   However, with today's knowledge and treatments, most people who have asthma are able to manage the disease. They have few, if any, symptoms. They can live normal, active lives and sleep through the night without interruption from asthma. Due: Wednesday, December 4th Stress is the body's reaction to a demanding situation.  Not all stress is considered harmful and scientists use the term "eustress" to describe positive or good stress like riding a roller coaster or meeting a new friend. Conversely, the term "distress" is used to describe negative or bad stress caused by unpleasant experiences or things that make you worry, nervous, or depressed. You need a balance of both in your life but 21st century living can cause too much distress and result in what is commonly called burnout. However, you can do a lot to manage the stress in your life. Stress relief can come from such things as exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, eating healthy, talking with a family member or mentor about your stress, having a hobby, meditating, deep breathing, or resting in a quiet place. You Are What You Eat Due  Friday, October 25th by 10 PM I'm sure you've heard it before- You are what you eat!  But do you know if what your eating is healthy?  Is it enough or too much of our daily nutrient needs?  The best way to answer this is too keep a food log- you would be surprised at what you eat if you actually kept track! In order to complete this FiT Work assignment, you must keep track of  everything  you eat and drink for an  entire day .  Keep a notebook with you or keep track in your phone, but you must take notes. FiT Work #2 Bicycle Safety

Due Wednesday, 9/18 at 10 pm Recently there has been an increase in cases of teenagers hit by cars while walking or riding their bicycle. Sometimes this happens even though they are in a pedestrian crosswalk. In fact, some Russell students have been hit by cars when crossing Escuela Parkway right in front of the school. Therefore, it is a good idea to occasionally review safety rules such as those established by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). For  FiT Work #2  you will watch two videos related to bicycle safety and  answer questions  based on what you learned in the videos. Parent Excuse Form

If you are at school, but unable to participate fully in P.E. due to an illness or injury, you must have your parent or guardian complete this Parent/Guardian Excuse Form . A parent or guardian may only excuse you from P.E. for up to three days. Plan ahead and print several copies so you have them when you need them.

Due Friday, April 5th by 10pm. Over 6,000 people drown every year in the United States. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1-14. Most drownings involve young people who are swimming, fishing, boating, water skiing, scuba diving, or surfing. If you enjoy these activities, the sensible course of action is to learn about safety in the water. The most important rule to remember regarding water is to learn how to swim well!
